Nova Scotia: 100% broadband by 2009

With the recent closure of an RFP, six proposals are now being examined — with WiMax being the most likely solution. The goal, according to government planners, is to make Nova Scotia “the most connected area in all of North America.”

Canadian Internet Service Landscape

The Inukshuk network is a Canada-wide broadband service that uses WiMAX technology. The advantage of WiMAX is its ability to send data wirelessly over long distances, meaning better and faster Internet access to rural and remote parts of the country. WiMAX is currently offered in 124 Canadian cities and is still expanding. Bell’s WiMAX service starts at $65/month, and Rogers is also offering WiMAX starting at $49.95 per month, not including installation and modem rental fees.
