Stress taking a toll

December 11th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in General

Just trying to juggle hectic work and home lives is impairing the health of many employees at 100 major Canadian workplaces surveyed for a Health Canada study.

“We want to know why we can’t afford our health-care system? Well, work is making people sick,” says Linda Duxbury, a business professor at Carleton University and co-author of a report called Reducing Work-Life Conflict: What Works? What Doesn’t?

Telecommuting, otherwise known as working from home, is not for everyone. But it works for me.

Laura Durst, a 16-year old honors student from rural Woodstock, Ct., announced today the launch of WorkInMyRoom.com (www.workinmyroom.com), the first website to offer screened telework jobs and projects for high school and college students.

The site, which Durst plans to continue to develop as she completes high school and enters college, includes paid survey taking, modeling and event staffing, voice work, writing, artwork sales, blogging, and other types of work. Some jobs are open to teens as young as 13, while others require a minimum age of 18. Durst personally screens all companies, and plans to add new opportunities regularly as schoolwork permits.

What’s your driver?

Telework is part of a broader workplace trend: flexible work practices.

Flexible work practices can ensure that the organisation is able to change quickly in response to changes around it and many of these changes are associated with trends in the environment we work in. These trends have been called the Drivers of Flexibility. These drivers have been present for many years but they are now becoming increasingly important.

The rest of the article details the specific drivers and is well worth the read.  Steve
