Survey Finds Salary Remains Top Draw for Job Candidates but Benefits Gaining in Popularity

February 14th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in General

A recent survey suggests that successfully wooing job candidates takes more than salary alone. While 31 per cent of chief financial officers (CFOs) interviewed said offering higher compensation than competitors is the most effective incentive for attracting accounting professionals, 20 per cent felt the benefits package had the greatest influence, up from 1 per cent five years ago.

The findings also suggest traditional incentives are a higher priority today: While the popularity of benefits surged, the number of financial executives who feel telecommuting and flexible work schedules are the top draw fell 8 points, from 28 per cent in 2003 to 20 per cent in 2008, on par with benefit packages.

The Paperless Web Worker

February 10th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in General

Exaggerated dreams of the “paperless office” have been around for so many years that they’ve even spawned their own jokes (”The paperless office will become a reality about the same time as the paperless toilet”). But according to a recent article in the New York Times, we may finally be reaching the point where the paperless home is a reality for some cutting-edge people. Given that many web workers see no distinction between home and office, it’s worth thinking about what it takes to be a paperless web worker.

A co-worker once told me that the only way to get rid of the paper in our workplace was to get rid of the people that create it ;-) Steve

Global Warming: Is Telework the Answer?

February 10th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Environment

Global warming – the gradual increase in the average temperature of air near the Earth’s surface and its ocean water – is projected to continue. But there are ways we can help.

With greening initiatives on the forefront of government officials’ minds, reducing carbon emissions by allowing government employees to telework a few days per week may help mitigate climate change.

We May All Need a Second Job, Telecommuting is an Option

February 5th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in General

High gas prices, employment layoffs, an increase in the number of foreclosures and talk of an upcoming recession have put many people in panic. Money is tight or non-existent in many households, and although some people may appear to be financially secure, the majority of the population in the United States is living from pay check to paycheck. Debt has forced some people to have two or three jobs. You should realize, however, that although you may need a part-time job in addition to your full-time gig, it may not be necessary for you to leave your home to work that second job. More companies like 1-800-Flowers and Cloud 10 are hiring employees who work via computer from their own homes.

Later on in this short article the author reminds us that “work-from-home jobs are also one of the biggest scams on the internet.”  Make sure you weed out the con artists from the legitimate telework employers. Steve
