Can You Be a Web Worker From a Small Town?

Part of the promise of working independently is to able to live and work where ever you choose. Getting away from the big city sounds great, but can you really work remotely from a small town? Can the technology support it?

The answer, of course, depends on the small town. Broadband is the most obvious issue, but isolation and general amenities are also worth thinking about. The advantages of small towns might just outweigh those problems, so let’s talk about it.

Rogers’ Portable Internet reaches 152 communities

Rogers Communications has announced in a press release that its Portable Internet wireless broadband internet service has expanded its coverage to 55 additional communities to reach 152 urban and rural locations across Canada, completing the rollout conditions of its spectrum licence. The footprint includes 56% of the Canadian population and 45 cities.

Maybe it’s just my imagination, but the potholes in our town seem bigger every year. The traffic seems worse, too and even the lineups for buses are longer. As we are unlikely to get light rail anytime soon, we must find other ways of reducing traffic chaos.

One option is to encourage telework in government departments. Even if commuters telework one day a week, we’ll get 20 per cent fewer vehicles on the road — the difference between chaos and orderly traffic flow.

Teleworkers: Gen Y employees may spark resurgence in working from home, says officials

When telecommuting hit North America more than three decades ago, many people predicted everyone would be doing it by now.

Instead, the number of teleworkers has dipped in Canada, and, recently, several prominent companies in the United States that were telecommuting pioneers have started calling some workers back to the office.

While telecommuting remains a staple of the modern workplace, the hype surrounding it seems to have cooled.
