Group touts telecommuting’s green benefits

An estimated 1.35 billion gallons of gasoline could be conserved annually if every U.S. worker with the ability to telecommute did so 1.6 days per week, according to a report released today by the American Electronics Association.

Home working option ‘should be extensive’

The option to work from home should ideally be extended to all people who work with the aid of a PC and a telephone.

That is the view of Brian Higton of the Telework Association, who said: “Some 80 per cent of the UK workforce can be categorised as ‘information workers’, i.e. people who work with data of one kind or another usually with the aid of a computer and a telephone.

Why don’t more workers telecommute? I’m not referring to reading your email at Starbucks, but truly working from home at least several days a week. I’ve been asking that question annually since the turn of the century, and somewhat surprisingly, the growth in telework is not as robust as most people think. Two problems seem to get harder each year – managing remote workers and security.
