What your boss hates about telecommuting

July 19th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in General

Deb Perelman of ZDNet has written an interesting post about the pitfalls of telecommuting as seen through the eyes of management. I would add that management needs to understand and be able to manage in an outcome-based workplace rather than one dominated by a time clock. Steve

In theory, everyone wants telecommuting to work. It is hard to argue against the goodness of companies saving on office space, managers landing happier and more productive workers who have more hours a day to work because they’re not in traffic, or drained from it; HR departments and recruiters pitching work-life balance to recruits, a priceless tactic to lure workers, young or old, who crave more flexibility than the confines of most office arrangement provide, and employees getting to spend less at the pump.

Goodbye cubicles, hello telework

The Bangkok Post has an intersting article about a new government and business supported telework project in Thailand. Steve

If you have been dreaming about working in your own home, now might be the time for it to happen. With rising oil prices and global warming problems, many companies are seriously thinking about implementing telework programmes.

Telework in Thailand should soon be quite popular. A few IT companies and government agencies have started the programme. The Fiscal Policy Office, a unit of the Finance Ministry, just announced that more than 40% of its staff would be able to work at home one day a week starting from this month until September next year.

According to an article on WHSV’s web site:

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced Wednesday a Telework initiative for gubernatorial appointees, which includes about 120 employees in the Cabinet and Governor’s Office. Kaine also announced an improved State Telework Policy, published late last week, directing all state agencies to consider ways to improve and expand agency Telework and alternate work schedule programs.
