Telecommuters need more than just broadband access

As the country’s second “most wired” city and the nation’s ninth-worst for traffic, it will come as no surprise that Seattle is home to a growing number of telecommuters.

Nationwide, as many as one in four Americans worked from home at least one day a week last year, and more than half of all businesses allowed for some form of telecommuting.

A new survey shows Canadian companies are deceiving themselves if they believe they have an effective mobility strategy.

The “war for talent” among companies hoping to lure or retain experienced older workers will be waged not with higher salaries, Thomson says, but with fringe benefits like flexible scheduling and time off.

Experts agree flexibility will be the biggest demand of boomers staying on the job, whether it means telecommuting from the cottage or vacation property, working mornings only, flex-hours or a few months at a time as consultants.

Teleworking Essential in Managing, Preventing Pandemic

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which had reported 91 U.S. cases of swine flu infection as of this morning, recommends six things people can do to prevent the spread of the disease. The first two items on the list are “avoid close contact” and “stay home when you are sick.” For those with the ability to work remotely, teleworking could be an essential tool in preventing the spread of the disease. Should the disease reach pandemic levels, teleworking could also become the safest way to keep essential government and other crucial services running.
