Ontera cuts 18 jobs – Directory assistance outsourced to Bell

TIMMINS — Ontera is laying off 12 operators in Timmins and another six in Cochrane in a cost-cutting measure which will see the telecommunications branch of Ontario Northland contract out its directory assistance service to Bell Canada.

Via The North Bay Nugget. It seems to me that these are positions that could remain in Northern Ontario as telework jobs. Keeping badly needed jobs in the north while at the same time making them more cost effective.

Telecommuting benefits disciplined

Despite the positive attention and federal dollars thrust upon the concept of telecommuting, a Montreal mom and a researcher from the University of Waterloo both warn that working from home is not for everybody.

“It takes a special type of person to be able to work from home,” said Heidi Crux, a Montreal-based medical transcriptionist. “It takes incredible discipline.”
