Almost half of Australia’s IT workers would take a pay cut if they could work from home. And around two in five would also take lower pay in return for flexible working hours, extra holidays or a better office location.

Kathy Webb is one of over one million Canadians who have chosen a telecommuting career. Two weeks ago, she started to do business transcription for an Alberta company from her Fredericton home.

The decision was made to find at-home employment because she was tired of having to drive on winter roads to go to an office to work. Each morning, she goes into her home office where she will remain for her eight-hour workday, taking care of business.

Imagine, for example, that you wanted to get away to a cottage over Christmas. If you can’t fill out the statutory holidays with leftover vacation time, you’re left with “small buckets of days – come in for two days, go back to the family, come in for another two days.” And you’re out of luck if you want to travel any distance. But with the proper tools and Internet connectivity, employees can “take a two-week block off and get their work done and still be with their family,” says Stein. “I think it’s less about work- creep and more about flexibility.”
